The Narrative Battlespace - How Stories Work and How We Should Work Around Them
Storytelling is a powerful instrument, one of the most powerful in the communications toolbox. Together, stories form narratives which we use to understand the world, and from which new strories are shaped. Under the guidance of these, new stories are told, in the realm of which events take place and decisions are made. Changing such narratives can prove close to impossible, but this is also the way societal advances take place and change is achieved. The US American David Judson is the editor of the Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review, the oldest English-language daily in Turkey and a part of the Dogan Media Group, an international publishing house which earns 40% of its revenue from outside of Turkey. From this privaleged position, and against the background of the complex relationship between Turkey and Europe and the current debate on European integration, David Judson will share his reflections on the power of narratives and the responsibility of communications professionals in what he calls the 'narrative battlespace.'
